Find Fonts: tools and apps

Tools for finding fonts for a website, app, presentation or print, pairing heading and body fonts and identifying the font in an image. First decide where the font will be used: installing it on a computer, embedding it in a website and bundling it in an app can fall under different license terms.

What should you compare?

Test a candidate font with your own text: type the special characters, numbers, punctuation and other languages you will use, and check readability in bold, italic and small sizes. When pairing, view heading and body text side by side in a real page layout.

The license is the main decision: read the license text to see whether a font offered for free allows commercial use, web embedding and use inside a logo. Paid fonts may sell desktop, web and app licenses separately; check on the official page whether there are limits on seats or page views.

How do I find the font in an image? Identification tools compare letter shapes and suggest similar candidates, so the result may not be an exact match. Use straight, close-up, unskewed text and compare the suggested font letter by letter by typing the same word.

Do fonts affect website speed? Each weight and style is a separate file, and many files can slow page loading. Choose only the weights you use, consider variable fonts and character subsets, and check whether the license allows hosting the files on your own server.
