Music Production (DAW): tools and apps

Digital audio workstations (DAWs) for recording multitrack audio and MIDI on your computer, editing parts, adding effects and mixing. First decide what you will do: recording instruments or vocals, making beats and arrangements, editing a podcast or mixing each need different features.

Good to know: Free-use terms vary by tool and plan. When a card lists no tool-specific limit, check quotas, watermarks and export terms on the official page.

SoundCraft

Desktop·Audio
Free option

SoundCraft is ArtCraft’s desktop digital audio workstation for recording, editing and mixing; it is not the mixing-console brand with a similar name. It offers separate Edit and Mix windows, multitrack audio and MIDI, ten inserts and ten sends per track, surround panning and CLAP plugin support. It is free and open source under MIT or Apache-2.0, but its README calls it pre-alpha and lists audio-interface and buffer-size selection, recording MIDI from a controller and session interchange (AAF/OMF) as still missing. The official getartcraft.com page lists SoundCraft as “In development” (checked 13 October 2026).

What should you compare?

Having AI generate music from a prompt and removing noise from a single recording are separate jobs; this page lists apps where you record and edit music yourself. Try a short project: record or import two tracks, write a MIDI part, add an effect, balance the levels, then export the result as WAV and listen on headphones.

Check on the official page which operating systems are supported, how it works with your audio interface and drivers, which plugin formats it loads and whether project files can move to another program. In browser versions, latency and hardware access may differ from the desktop app. If the app is in alpha, beta or development, also keep your recordings as separate audio files and save often.

Why is there a delay (latency) when I record? Latency depends on the audio driver, the audio interface and the buffer size. Use a smaller buffer while recording and a larger one while mixing, and listen to yourself on headphones to check whether the delay is acceptable.

Can I move my project to another DAW? Project files usually open only in their own program. If you need to move, export each track as a separate audio file (a stem) and save MIDI parts as MIDI files; plugin settings often do not carry over.
