Free option

VectorCraft is a free, open-source vector illustration app for macOS, Windows and Linux, with a pen tool, direct selection, shape booleans, live effects that stay editable (such as blends and gradient mesh), image tracing, and SVG and PDF import and export. Its GitHub README calls it alpha, states a dual MIT or Apache-2.0 license and lists remaining gaps, such as reliable exchange of .ai files. getartcraft.com lists VectorCraft as “In development” (checked 13 October 2026).

What should you compare?

Finding ready-made icons or illustrations and designing from a template are separate jobs; this page lists apps for drawing from scratch. Draw a simple shape: build a curve with the pen tool, combine two shapes or subtract one from the other, then export the file as SVG and PDF and check that it opens in another program.

The browser version and the desktop app may differ in how they save files, work offline and use fonts; check each point on the official page. If an app describes itself as alpha, beta or in development, work on a copy for important projects and read the release notes. Confirm the license and the conditions for free use on the official page.

What is the difference between vector and pixel-based images? A vector file stores shapes as mathematical curves, so it can be enlarged without losing quality; pixel-based images such as photos get blurry as they grow. Vectors suit logos and icons, while a pixel-based editor suits photo editing.

Can I open a file made in another program? SVG and PDF open in most apps, but formats that belong to a single program are not always supported. Gradients, effects and text can look different in another app; open a copy of an important file and compare before you move it.
