Who is it for?

  • Useful for designers and developers who want to find missing alternative text, contrast problems or empty links visually on the page.
  • The extension suits people who need to check a page behind a login, a local page or a dynamic page in their own browser.

Getting started

  • For a public page, enter its address on the official site; for pages behind a login or local pages, install the browser extension.
  • Read the red error, yellow alert and green accessibility feature icons separately; fix the errors first.
  • Review the yellow alerts by hand: judge yourself whether alternative text really fits the image, and rescan the page after fixing.

Decision points

  • If the page is behind a login, local or dynamic, choose the extension over the online tool; the official extension page says it evaluates the page in your browser and sends no information to the WAVE server.
  • If you need ongoing monitoring of many pages, the official site mentions a Pope Tech partnership for enterprise monitoring; this entry describes only the single-page scanning tool.

Limits

  • WAVE cannot tell you that a page is accessible; according to the official help page only a human can determine true accessibility, and the tool supports human review.
  • The online version is more limited than the extension in applying scripts; if the icons break the layout, read the page with CSS disabled. OOXL did not run the tool or measure results.

Frequently asked questions

If WAVE reports 0 errors, is my page WCAG compliant?

No. The tool shows only the problems it can find automatically and items that need human review; according to the official help page only a human can determine accessibility.

Is my page data sent to WebAIM?

With the online tool you give WAVE the page address. The extension evaluates the page in your browser and the official extension page says no information is sent to the WAVE server; prefer the extension for sensitive pages.
