Website Speed and Accessibility Test: tools and apps
Tools for checking how fast a web page loads, its Core Web Vitals and its accessibility problems. First decide what you want to measure: the speed of a live page, the effect of a change during development, or the barriers that keyboard and screen reader users meet.
Good to know: Free-use terms vary by tool and plan. When a card lists no tool-specific limit, check quotas, watermarks and export terms on the official page.
Accessibility Insights for Web is a Microsoft tool that runs as a Chrome and Microsoft Edge extension, with FastPass for a quick scan and Assessment for step-by-step WCAG 2.1 AA evaluation.
WAVE is a WebAIM tool that marks accessibility and WCAG errors directly on a web page with icons; it is offered as an online tool and as a browser extension.
Why it fits
Website Speed and Accessibility Test
What should you compare?
Measure the same page several times with mobile and desktop settings; results can vary with test location, network and server load. Fix the few biggest issues the report shows, then measure again under the same conditions and compare.
Lab tests measure a single simulated device, while real-user (field) data may also be shown for pages with enough visits. Check in the official documentation which data the tool uses, where it tests from and what test limits the free plan has.
Does a high score mean my site is fast? A score summarizes measurements under one test condition; real visitors have different devices and connections. Instead of chasing the score alone, look at when the page shows its first content, how quickly it responds to interaction and whether the layout shifts.
Is an automated accessibility test enough? Automated tools find some problems, such as missing alt text, low contrast or unlabeled form fields, but not all of them. Navigate the page with only a keyboard, listen with a screen reader and try it zoomed in.
