Create Presentations: tools and apps

Tools for building slide presentations, arranging them with slide masters and themes, adding transitions and animations, and presenting with a presenter view. First decide where you will present: your own computer, someone else’s computer, a meeting room screen or a PDF sent by email each need different preparation.

Good to know: Free-use terms vary by tool and plan. When a card lists no tool-specific limit, check quotas, watermarks and export terms on the official page.

DeckCraft

Free option

DeckCraft is a desktop presentation app for building slide decks with slide masters and layouts, themes, more than 150 preset shapes, transitions including Morph, animations and a presenter view with speaker notes and rehearsal timings. It opens and saves presentation files (.pptx) and exports PDF slides and handouts. It is free and open source under MIT or Apache-2.0, and the official page says it needs no subscription and no cloud, while the README calls it alpha. The official getartcraft.com page lists DeckCraft as “In development” (checked 13 October 2026).

What should you compare?

Making a single-page graphic from a template and writing a report as a document are separate jobs; this page lists apps for building slide presentations. Make a short test deck: choose a theme and a slide master, add a chart and an image, write speaker notes, then open the presenter view and run through the presentation from start to finish.

Check on the official page whether the app runs in a browser or on the desktop, whether you can present without an internet connection, how teamwork on the same file works and which file formats it opens and saves (for example .pptx, .odp and PDF). Some tools generate draft slides with AI; that is a separate feature, so confirm language support and whether the result can be edited. If the app is in alpha, beta or development, keep a PDF backup ready before an important presentation.

Will my presentation break on another computer? Fonts, embedded videos, animations and linked files can behave differently on another computer or in another program. Before you present, open the file on the computer you will use and keep a PDF copy with you.

Can I open my presentation in another program? Common presentation formats open in many programs, but transitions, animations, custom fonts and slide layout can change. Before sharing the file, open it in the program the other person uses and check it.
