Page layout tools for arranging multi-page publications such as magazines, brochures, catalogs, books and reports with parent pages, text frames and styles, and exporting them as PDF for print or screen. First decide whether the publication will be printed or read on screen, and how many pages it will have.
Good to know: Free-use terms vary by tool and plan. When a card lists no tool-specific limit, check quotas, watermarks and export terms on the official page.
DesignCraft is a native page layout and publishing app with spreads and parent pages, stories threaded across frames, paragraph and character styles, swatches and text wrap, and it exports PDF with embedded fonts, CMYK and spot colors, bleed and crop marks. The official page says it is free and open source, with no subscription, license server or telemetry; its README says that it is released under MIT or Apache-2.0 and that the roadmap stage is pre-alpha. getartcraft.com lists DesignCraft as “In development” (checked 13 October 2026).

What should you compare?
For a single poster or social media graphic, template design tools are often quicker; this page lists apps that lay out multi-page documents. Make a test of a few pages: create a parent page, flow text into two columns, define heading and paragraph styles, then export a PDF and check that text and line breaks stay in place.
Hyphenation and special characters in your language, right-to-left scripts and embedding fonts in the PDF vary from app to app; confirm them in the official documentation. Check separately which formats can be imported and exported to exchange files with other programs. If the app is in alpha, beta or development, review the output page by page and work on a copy before delivering an important publication.
What should I check in a file for the print shop? Ask the printer for the technical requirements, such as color mode, bleed, crop marks, resolution and PDF standard, and set your export to match. Before sending, check in the PDF that fonts are embedded and images keep enough resolution.
What is the difference between a template design tool and a page layout program? Template tools are for quickly making single-page graphics; page layout programs manage consistent styles across many pages, text flow, page numbers and tables of contents. For a book, a magazine or a long report, a layout program fits better.
