What should you compare?

Add a few real sources by DOI, ISBN or browser extension and check that author, year, title and page fields come through correctly. Then insert two citations in your word processor, switch the style and see whether the bibliography updates automatically.

Confirm integration with Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or LaTeX (BibTeX) and support for styles such as APA, MLA and Chicago in the official documentation. Compare free storage, PDF attachments, group libraries and RIS or BibTeX export.

Are automatic citations always correct? No; source metadata can be incomplete or wrong. Before submitting, compare the bibliography with the style guide, especially author names, capitalization, DOI links and access dates.

How is this different from AI research tools? Reference managers store, organize and format the sources you choose; finding or summarizing new sources is not their core job. Use AI research tools to look for sources and these tools to manage what you keep.
