Who is it for?

  • Useful for students and researchers who want to collect papers, web pages and books in one library and insert citations and a bibliography into a document.
  • Useful for writing in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs, because the documentation describes plugins for all three.

Getting started

  • Install the Zotero desktop app for Windows, macOS or Linux and add the Zotero Connector for your browser.
  • Save sources from web pages with the Connector, add files, and organize everything in collections and with tags.
  • Install the word processor plugin, insert citations while you write, choose a citation style, and let Zotero update the bibliography.

Decision points

  • Choose it for a long-term library with PDF reading, notes, groups and duplicate detection; for a one-off bibliography, a lighter web tool may be enough.
  • If you will sync attached files across devices, plan for the free storage limit: 300 MB is given for attached files, larger plans are for purchase, and WebDAV can be used for personal libraries.

Limits

  • Syncing requires a Zotero account and free file storage is 300 MB; larger storage is paid and its price was not shown on the pages reviewed.
  • Zotero Connectors are for desktop browsers only; iOS and Android apps exist, but this entry covers the desktop app.
