Word processors for writing and formatting documents such as letters, assignments, reports, theses and contracts, with styles, tables, footnotes and tables of contents. First decide who you will share the document with and which file format they use.
Good to know: Free-use terms vary by tool and plan. When a card lists no tool-specific limit, check quotas, watermarks and export terms on the official page.
WordCraft is a native word processor with a ribbon, a live styles gallery, tables, track changes and comments, tables of contents, footnotes, citations in APA, MLA, Chicago and IEEE styles and mail merge; it opens and saves .docx and exports PDF. The official page says it is free, open source and works offline, and its README says that it is released under MIT or Apache-2.0, that it has a Turkish interface among many languages and checks spelling and grammar in English and Polish, and that keeping charts and SmartArt through a round trip, pagination closer to Word’s and native printing are still needed for beta. getartcraft.com lists WordCraft as “In development” (checked 13 October 2026).

What should you compare?
Having AI write text and converting PDF files are separate jobs; this page lists apps where you write and edit documents yourself. Open a real document of yours: try heading styles, numbered lists, a table and a table of contents, then save it and open it in another program and as a PDF to see whether the formatting holds.
Check on the official page whether the app runs in a browser or on the desktop, whether it works without an internet connection, whether several people can write in the same document, and how comments and tracked changes work. Spell checking in your language is a separate feature; look at the language list. If the app is in alpha, beta or development, back up important documents and review the PDF output before you hand it in.
Will my document look the same in another program? Common formats such as .docx and .odt open in many programs, but fonts, complex tables, tracked changes and page layout can look different. If the layout must stay exactly as it is, share the final version as a PDF.
What is the difference between a word processor and an AI writing tool? A word processor is for writing and formatting the document yourself; AI writing tools generate draft text from a prompt. Some word processors also include AI features; check on the official page what data they use.
