Editorial selection guide

Last checked:

Who is it for?

  • It suits designers and developers who want to add animations that react to user interaction to an app, game or website.
  • It suits people who want what they build in the editor to run unchanged in the app; the home page says what you build in the editor is what ships.

Getting started

  • Open the browser editor or install the macOS or Windows app from the downloads page; sign-up is required for the editor.
  • Draw the animation and define inputs, transitions and reactions with the state machine.
  • Pick the runtime for your target platform and export the file; on the free plan .riv files carry a splash screen.

Decision points

  • The free plan has 3 collaborative files, 1 project and a 10 MB limit per imported asset; removing the splash screen and getting unlimited collaborative files needs a paid plan (Cadet and above).
  • If you only need a simple ready-made animation file, building an interactive system may be heavier than needed; look at ready-made animation libraries as well.

Limits

  • The free plan has no libraries, CDN hosting, revision history, real-time collaboration or batch export. Prices may change and are not recorded here.
  • The terms say users own content made in the editor and Community content can be remixed under a Creative Commons license; commercial use of free-plan exports and the splash-screen condition are not described, so check them.

Frequently asked questions
